Seattle Mariners Team Report - April 23

(Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners hope to hold on to the top spot in the AL West, as they continue their three-game series against the Cleveland Indians tonight.

In the series opener on Tuesday, Mike Cameron hit his fourth career grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning to cap a five-run rally and lift Seattle to an 8-5 win over Cleveland.

Cameron and John Olerud each finished with two hits and scored twice for the Mariners, who have won four of their last five and eight of 10. Dan Wilson drove in three runs in the victory.

Cameron's slam allowed Seattle to overcome a 5-3 deficit after the Indians scored three runs in the top of the ninth. His diving catch in shallow center field ended the rally and prevented any further damage.

Giovanni Carrara (1-0) earned the win despite allowing a two-run hit by Bill Selby in the ninth.

Seattle will pin its hopes tonight on righthander Gil Meche, who is 1-1 on the year with a 4.86 ERA. He has allowed three runs over his last two starts, but did not earn the decision in his last outing against Oakland on Thursday. In that game he surrendered an unearned run and four hits over six solid innings.

He is 0-2 with a 3.00 ERA in two career starts against the Indians

Although Olerud has yet to homer this season, he does lead the team with 14 RBI.
