American League Game Summary - Minnesota at Chicago
(Friday, April 25th)
Final Score: Minnesota 6, Chicago 1
Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Joe Mays struck out three in seven strong
innings and Bobby Kielty belted a two-run homer, as Minnesota rolled to a 6-1
victory over Chicago in the opener of a three-game series at U.S. Cellular
Field.
Mays (3-2), who didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning, surrendered just
four hits and one run in the outing. Kielty finished with three hits and
scored twice, while Matt LeCroy added a pair of hits and two RBI for the
Twins, who snapped a six-game losing streak.
Chicago starter Mark Buehrle (2-3) was saddled with the loss, allowing three
runs on five hits in seven innings of work. He struck out four and walked two
for the White Sox, who've lost five of six. Frank Thomas blasted a solo homer
in the loss.
Minnesota jumped all over Buehrle in the top of the first inning. Dustan Mohr
doubled to lead off the frame, moved to third on Cristian Guzman's grounder,
and scored when Corey Koskie followed with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Torii Hunter then tripled to drive in Kielty, who had drawn a one-out walk.
After Buehrle hit Doug Mientkiewicz with a pitch, LeCroy roped a single to
score Hunter and give the Twins an early 3-0 lead.
The White Sox didn't post a run until the seventh when Thomas belted his
fourth homer of the season to left-center field, pulling Chicago within 3-1.
The Twins came right back with three runs in the top of the eighth, however,
to put the game out of reach. Kielty's two-run homer scored Guzman, who
reached when he was hit by White Sox reliever David Sanders. LeCroy's RBI
single with two outs then made it a 6-1 game, and LaTroy Hawkins and J.C.
Romero retired Chicago in the eighth and ninth innings to preserve the win.
