TIM CATES
Sports Updates on XTRA 570
At the age of 27, Tim Cates, the youngest sports anchor in all of Southern California, has already earned widespread respect from his peers for his journalistic integrity. For one so young, he brings a wealth of experience to the job. Having started at XTRA in 1997, Tim has worked his way up from an intern, to producer, to now update anchor and host of post-game Bruin Talk. In February 2005, Tim was named one of the "Top 5 Update Anchors" in Southern California by the Los Angeles Daily News.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Tim was a standout 2-sport athlete in high school, earning ALL-CIF honors in baseball. He attended UCLA, where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in History. While at UCLA, he worked at the student station KLA 91.9FM, and also started an internship at XTRA SPORTS 1150.
Following his graduation from UCLA, Tim started fulltime at XTRA, producing several different radio shows. With a strong work ethic and a large rolodex, Tim quickly rose through the ranks, before being named Executive Producer in 2000.
In the spring of 2001, Tim got his on-air opportunity at XTRA, when he traveled with the Lakers during the NBA Finals. From there, his youthful voice was used on a regular basis, as a reporter and weekend update anchor. Tim has traveled the country reporting from Super Bowls, NCAA Final Fours, MLB All-Star Games and the NBA Finals.
In April of 2004, Tim was named the Night-time Update Anchor at XTRA. As well as his work Monday through Friday, you can also hear Tim on the UCLA Radio Network, both on the pre-game show and as host of Post-Game Bruin Talk.
Tim currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two daughters.
